Our complete range from Lahad Datu — sambals, powders, and more from Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen.

Sambal Stories from Lahad Datu

Sambal is the must-have condiment in Malaysia. There are many variations of sambal, and preference is very subjective—comparison between one sambal and another is almost immaterial. What truly defines sambal is the perfect balance between chili and its aromatic companions: shallots, garlic, ginger, ginger torch, lemongrass, and calamansi. Add umami from dried shrimp paste or vegan belacan, and you have one of Malaysia’s most iconic “hot sauces.”

The sambals we offer at the Bukit Piton Orangutan Project Shop come directly from Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen. Our ingredients are sourced as sustainably as possible from local suppliers in Sabah who practice good farming. Every sambal is hand-washed, peeled, and slow-cooked with care and patience—so you can enjoy a taste that feels truly homemade.

Powder Collection

Our naturally crafted powders capture the colors, nutrients, and flavors of Lahad Datu’s farm life — from our blue pea blossoms and moringa leaves to kampung-grown ginger roots. Each powder is made in small batches, gently dried and ground to preserve its essence.

Blue Pea Powder adds a brilliant natural hue to your dishes and drinks — from rice to lattes — with a mild floral note and antioxidant properties. Moringa Powder, known as the “Tree of Life,” is rich in vitamins and plant proteins, perfect for smoothies, soups, or baked goods. Kampung Ginger Powder brings warmth and spice — harvested from local smallholders and sun-dried to retain its intense aroma.

Together, these powders tell a story of mindful farming and creative cooking — connecting our farm’s diversity with your everyday kitchen, one spoonful at a time.

Vegan Collection

Rooted in simplicity and guided by the richness of plants, our Vegan Collection celebrates the flavors of Sabah in their purest form. From earthy moringa to the gentle sweetness of blue pea and the warmth of kampung ginger — every ingredient is thoughtfully chosen to nourish, energize, and inspire.

At Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen, “vegan” isn’t just a label — it’s a way of honoring the land and the farmers who grow our food. Each product is handmade in small batches, using locally sourced ingredients from our farm and trusted suppliers across Lahad Datu. We avoid artificial colors, preservatives, and shortcuts — instead embracing the natural colors, aromas, and vitality that plants have to offer.

Whether you’re exploring plant-based cooking or simply love honest, wholesome flavors, our vegan powders, sambals, and condiments bring a piece of Sabah’s farm life to your table. Simple, clean, and full of life — just the way nature intended.
